What your child practices

  • Control a crayon to color inside large, bold outlines
  • Count two objects by pointing to each one in turn
  • Name familiar Halloween pictures: a ghost, a pumpkin, a candy bucket and stars
  • Choose colors on their own for each part of the picture

About this worksheet

This ghost coloring page shows a round, smiling ghost with big eyes floating just above a plump pumpkin with a curly stem. The ghost holds a candy bucket with a jack-o'-lantern face, and a little star floats on each side. Your child colors each big shape, then answers the question at the bottom of the page: how many stars are beside the ghost?

Between two and five, children are moving from whole-arm scribbles toward smaller marks made from the wrist and fingers. Big, bold outlines give them a clear edge to aim for, and practicing slowing down and turning the crayon at that edge builds the hand control they will later need for drawing and writing. Counting the two stars is a small but real counting task: one number word for each object.

Tape the corners of the page to the table before your child starts. With the paper held still, they can use their other hand to steady themselves and put all their attention into the crayon.

How to use this sheet

Ask what color your child thinks a ghost could be, since it doesn't have to be white. When they count the stars, have them touch each one as they say the number.
