About this worksheet
This page shows a hobby horse toy on its own, just the head and pole, the way it would look propped in a corner of a playroom. The head is drawn large with two pointed ears, one round eye with a tiny white highlight, a single oval nostril and a small curved smile. Down one side of the head runs a mane made of six rounded scallops, like a row of soft bumps. Below the head a long straight stick runs down the page to a rounded handle at the bottom, the part a child would grip if they were riding it.
Most of this page is made up of big, open shapes: the head itself, the stick, and the handle are all wide areas a young child can fill in without worrying about staying inside tight lines. The mane is the one part that asks for a bit more care, since each scallop is its own small closed shape and can be given its own colour if a child fancies a stripy or patchy mane. The face stays simple, just the one eye, the nostril and the mouth, so there is nothing fiddly to trip up a first attempt at a face.
Because the shapes are large and there are so few of them, this sheet sits at the easy end of the colouring pile. It works well for a child colouring completely on their own for the first time, and it is a quick one to finish, so it suits a short sitting before dinner or while waiting in the car for a sibling's class to end.
How to use this sheet
Start with the head, the biggest space, so your child gets an early win. If the mane scallops feel fiddly, let them use one colour for the whole mane instead of six. Ask them what colour their own hobby horse would be.
