About this worksheet
This snake has a big, rounded head with two large oval eyes, small dot nostrils and a closed, curved smile — no fangs or forked tongue here, just a friendly face. Its body rises straight up out of a round basket, loops over in a thick curl on the right like a hook, and disappears back down into the basket weave. The basket itself sits on a low base and is marked out in several broad curved panels with a rolled rim at the top and bottom, so it reads like a woven pot without being fiddly to look at.
Almost every space on this page is generous: the head, the long loop of body, and each basket panel are all big enough for a young hand to fill without straying over a line. The only small areas are the two eyes and the two nostril dots, which makes a nice place to talk about "little bits" versus "big bits" while your child works out where to start. Because the basket panels are separate shapes, the page also invites using two or three different colours instead of one flat wash, if your child wants to make the basket look woven.
This is a gentle, low-pressure sheet, closer to a warm-up page than a challenge. The size and simplicity of the shapes suit toddlers and younger preschoolers best, while older fours and fives may want to add extra colours or a pattern to the basket panels to make it more interesting for themselves.
How to use this sheet
Start with the snake's head, since it is the biggest single shape, then work down the body before tackling the basket panels one at a time. If the small eye and nostril dots feel fiddly, skip them until last or leave them white.
