About this worksheet
This whale shark swims to the left with a big open smile and two round eyes, one tucked near the top of its head and the other set lower, close to the mouth. Its body carries three different spot shapes: a cluster of large oval spots near the head and along the top of the back, a row of narrower, elongated spots running across the middle of the body, and a few small round dots near the tail. Four fins reach out from the body — a small pointed fin, a tall fin that sweeps back like a sail, a broad fin below the head, and a smaller fin tucked near the smiling mouth.
The rounded body and broad fins give a child plenty of open space to fill in quickly and without much fuss, while the spots ask for something a bit more careful. The big oval spots near the head are forgiving for a first go at staying inside a line, and the narrower spots along the back make a good next step once a child is ready to work a little smaller. It is an easy page to talk over as you go — count the fins together, compare the round spots with the thinner ones, or pick one colour for the body and a different one for every spot.
Next to other sheets in the ocean set, this is a straightforward one. There is nothing fiddly here beyond the smaller spots near the tail, so it works for a toddler colouring for the first time as well as a preschooler who wants to slow down and pay more attention to detail.
How to use this sheet
Let your child start with the big body and fins, since those are the quickest wins. Save the spots for last and pick two colours — one for the round spots, one for the narrower ones — so the pattern stays easy to follow.
