About this worksheet
This cowboy stands facing forward with a big smile, one hand raised in a wave with all five fingers spread open, and the other hand holding a neatly coiled lasso down by his side. He wears a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, a knotted neckerchief at his throat, a shirt with cuffed sleeves, trousers held up by a large oval belt buckle, and two sturdy cowboy boots with a heel and stitching line on each.
Most of this page is made up of big, calm spaces: the hat, the shirt, the trousers and the boots all give a young child plenty of room to colour without worrying about staying inside tiny lines. The coiled lasso is the one part that asks for more care, since it is made of several curved rings sitting inside each other, and the belt buckle and face are small enough to invite a child to slow down and pick a different colour for each. It is an easy page to talk over too: ask what colour hat a cowboy should wear, or count the loops in the rope together before filling them in.
Because the large areas outnumber the fiddly ones, this sheet suits a wide range of confidence levels, from a toddler who mostly wants to colour the hat and shirt in big strokes, to an older preschooler ready to take on the rope, buckle and boot stitching with a finer hand. It sits on the easier side of medium difficulty for this reason, and works well as a first Western-themed page before trying busier scenes.
How to use this sheet
Let your child start with the hat and shirt, the biggest spaces on the page, before moving to the coiled lasso, which needs a steadier hand. If the rope's rings feel too fiddly, colouring it as one solid shape is fine too.
