What your child practises

  • Colours large curved areas like the lamp's body and base without needing to stop and start
  • Practises filling a narrow pointed shape by colouring the three sparkles
  • Chooses different colours for the handle, lid and body to separate the parts of the lamp
  • Names a facial expression by describing how the smiling lamp looks

About this worksheet

This magic lamp has a plump, rounded body that takes up most of the page, sitting on a ring-shaped stand with an oval foot underneath. On the left is a big curled handle shaped like a loop, and on the right a long curved spout points up and out. On top sits a domed lid with a small round knob, and above the spout float three sparkles of different sizes, drawn as simple four-pointed stars. The lamp's body has a friendly face on it, with two round eyes, curved eyebrows and a wide smile.

Nearly every shape here is large and closed, so a child can colour the belly of the lamp, the lid, the base and the handle in broad strokes without worrying about staying inside tight lines. The sparkles are the one place that asks for a bit more care, since their points are narrow, but there are only three of them and they can easily become a single bright colour like yellow or gold while the lamp itself goes any colour a child fancies. The face is a nice spot to talk about how the lamp feels, happy and ready for its wish.

This is an easy sheet, closer to a warm-up page than a challenge, and suits toddlers and younger preschoolers who are still building confidence with a crayon. Older fours and fives who like a bit more detail might move through it quickly, but it works well as a first go at a fantasy theme before trying busier pages in the same category.

How to use this sheet

Start with the lamp's round body since it is the biggest space, then move to the handle, lid and base. Save the three sparkles for last, as their pointed tips are the fiddliest part and a shaky line there will not spoil the rest of the picture.
