What your child practises

  • Practises staying inside a thick, simple outline
  • Names the three fruits and matches a sensible colour to each one
  • Colours smaller separate details, such as the ears, tail curl and apple leaf

About this worksheet

This monkey stands on two feet with its tail curled in a loose spiral behind it, both arms raised straight up and its fingers spread wide as if it has just tossed three fruits into the air: a curved banana, an apple with a little leaf on its stem, and a round orange marked with a small flower shape. Its face is simple and cheerful, with round eyes, an oval nose and a wide open smile, framed by two big rounded ears and a small tuft of hair on top of its head.

The monkey's body is made up of large, uncluttered shapes, an oval belly, rounded arms and legs, and a big head, so a child can colour most of the page with broad strokes and not worry about staying inside tiny lines. The three fruits floating above give a natural reason to reach for more than one colour: yellow for the banana, red or green for the apple, orange for the orange. It is an easy page for naming fruit out loud while colouring, or for picking one colour per fruit and matching it to the real thing in the fruit bowl.

Compared with other animal sheets in this set, this one is on the simpler side. The shapes are big, the outlines are thick, and there is nothing fiddly like fur texture or a busy background to fill in. It suits younger colourers who want to finish a whole page without getting tired, and it also works well as a quick one when there are only a few minutes before dinner.

How to use this sheet

Start with the three fruits at the top so your child can name each one and pick its colour before tackling the bigger monkey shape below. If the belly oval feels big, let them scribble it in freely rather than colour edge to edge.
