About this worksheet
This toy soldier is mid-march, one boot forward, one hand waving hello, with a big round smile and rosy cheeks. He wears a tall cylindrical hat with a stripe and a circle badge on the front, a buttoned jacket with three round buttons down the middle, an oval epaulette on each shoulder, and a pair of chunky boots. Tucked under his other arm is a drum with a criss-cross pattern on the front and two crossed drumsticks resting against it.
Nearly every shape here is large and closed, which is exactly what makes it a good one to hand over without much setup. The hat, jacket, trousers and boots are big open spaces a young child can fill in with one confident colour each, while the buttons, badge and drumsticks give smaller spots for anyone who wants to slow down and be careful. It is also a nice one to talk through while colouring: why is he waving, what tune might the drum be playing, does his hat match his boots.
There is nothing fiddly or cramped in this drawing, no tiny background detail to lose patience over, so it sits on the easier end of the sheets in this set. It works well as a first attempt at a "person" drawing for a toddler, or as a quick, low-pressure page for a preschooler between more detailed sheets.
How to use this sheet
Let your child start with the big spaces, the hat and jacket, before moving to the three small buttons and the drumsticks. If the drum pattern feels too fiddly, one flat colour works just as well.
