About this worksheet

This is a coloring page of a smiling scarecrow standing in a field with his arms stretched wide. He wears a floppy straw hat and a shirt and trousers with three stitched patches, and straw pokes out of his collar, sleeves and cuffs. A little bird sits on one arm, two round pumpkins rest at his feet and corn stalks grow on either side. The prompt at the bottom asks who is sitting on the scarecrow's arm and how many pumpkins your child can count.

At two to five, children are still learning to steer a crayon where they mean it to go. Big closed shapes like the pumpkins and the shirt let them practice slowing down near a line, while the small patches and the bird ask for a little more care. Counting two pumpkins or three patches by touching each one also practices matching one number word to one object, which young children are still working on.

Before your child starts, talk together about what a scarecrow is for and why a bird sitting on one is a little funny. It turns the picture into a short story they can color their way through.

How to use this sheet

Chunky crayons are easier than markers for small hands on the big shapes. Let the patches be any colors your child likes; they do not have to match.
