About this worksheet

A smiling sun, a puffy cloud, a butterfly, two flowers and a grassy hill fill the page, and every shape has a number from 1 to 6 in it. The key at the top matches each number to a color swatch and its name: yellow, blue, red, green, orange and pink. The child finds a number, checks the key and colors that shape.

Color by number asks a child to do two things at once: recognize a written numeral and keep in mind which color it stands for. Checking the key and coming back to the picture builds working memory, and the big, closed shapes are good practice for crayon control. Some numbers show up in more than one place, like the 5s in both flower centers and the butterfly's body, so the child also practices scanning the whole page.

If you print in black and white, color the six swatches on the key together before you start, and say each color name as you go.

How to use this sheet

Work on one number at a time: have your child point to every 1 first, then color them all yellow before moving on to 2. The butterfly's body segments are the smallest shapes, so it's fine to save them for last.
