About this worksheet

Little Red Riding Hood walks down a winding path through the woods with a covered basket on her arm. Tall trees, bushes and three big flowers line the path, and a smiling wolf peeks out from behind a tree trunk. At the bottom of the page, your child is asked to find the wolf hiding behind the tree.

Coloring the cape, basket and flowers builds hand strength and control of a crayon, which children will later need for holding a pencil. A familiar fairy tale also gives children something to talk about. Pointing to characters and saying what they are doing helps build vocabulary and early storytelling skills.

Before your child starts coloring, ask them to point to the wolf, the basket and the path. If they know the story, ask where Little Red Riding Hood is going. If they don't, you can tell them the story in a few sentences.

How to use this sheet

Give your child a few thick crayons, including red for the cape, and let them choose the other colors. Younger children can color only the big shapes, like the cape and trees, and leave the small details for later.
