What your child practises

  • Colours a large curved area, the belly, without needing to stop and restart
  • Chooses a separate colour for the heart-shaped face patch versus the body
  • Colours smaller rounded shapes such as the flippers and feet without going over the edges
  • Counts the three toes on each foot and the tuft of feathers on the head

About this worksheet

This penguin chick stands facing forward with both flippers stretched out to the sides, as if waving hello. A little tuft of three feathers sticks up on top of its head, and a heart-shaped patch outlines its face, framing two large round eyes, each with a pupil and a bright highlight circle. A small rounded beak sits between the eyes, and two little feet with three rounded toes each plant the chick firmly on the page. There is no background, snow or scenery here, so the whole sheet is just the chick.

What makes this one worth printing is the size of the spaces. The belly is one big, open, gently curved area that a young child can fill without worrying about staying inside tight lines, while the flippers, feet and face patch are smaller but still simple shapes with no fiddly corners. The heart-shaped patch gives a natural reason to pick a different colour for the face than the body, and the tuft and toes are small enough to ask a child to slow down and use a finer stroke if they feel ready for it. The waving pose and big round eyes also give you something easy to chat about while they colour.

This is a straightforward sheet, on the easy end for a preschool colouring page. The bold, thick outlines and small number of separate areas mean there is little chance of a child feeling overwhelmed, which makes it a good pick for a first attempt at colouring inside the lines, or for a quick calm activity when you need one that will not turn into a battle over detail.

How to use this sheet

Let your child start with the big belly first, since it is the easiest space to fill and builds confidence before the smaller face patch, flippers and feet. If the tuft or toes feel too fiddly, it is fine to skip them or colour over the lines.
