What your child practises

  • Fills large curved areas, like the sails and hull, without lifting the crayon often
  • Stays inside a rounded outline while colouring the wavy water lines
  • Chooses and keeps track of separate colours for the sails, hull and waves
  • Points out and names the boat's face, mast and flag while colouring

About this worksheet

This page shows a toy sailboat sitting on the water with a happy face drawn right on its rounded hull, two round eyes and a curved smile. Above the hull sits a tall mast with a small wavy flag at the top, and two overlapping triangle sails fill most of the page, one slightly behind the other. Underneath the boat, two scalloped wavy lines stand in for the sea, stacked one under the other.

There is nothing fiddly here. The sails are two huge blank triangles, the hull is one big curved bowl, and the waves are made of soft, wide humps, so a child can fill each shape with a single colour and rarely need to stop at a tight corner. The face gives them a reason to talk about the drawing while they work, is the boat happy to be sailing, and it is an easy page to ask what colour the sails should be or whether the sea is blue or green today. The flag and mast are the only narrow bits, and even those are simple straight and wavy shapes rather than sharp detail.

Because almost every shape on the page is large and rounded, this is one of the easier sheets in the toy category and a solid choice for a child who is still learning to keep crayon inside a line. It suits a first attempt at colouring more than it suits a child chasing a challenge, though older preschoolers can still enjoy picking a colour scheme for the sails, hull and waves.

How to use this sheet

Start with the two big sails since they are the easiest shapes to fill, then move to the hull and face. If your child strays over a line on the waves, don't fix it, just praise the colours they picked.
