This page has just one penguin, facing straight ahead and standing still, so there is nothing else competing for attention. Its head is one big circle holding two large oval eyes with a curved eyebrow line above each, a black pupil in every eye, and a small rounded beak turned up in a smile. Two flippers stick out to the sides, held slightly away from the body, and two stubby feet with three rounded toes each sit at the bottom. Right in the middle of the tummy is a large oval belly patch, drawn as its own separate shape from the rest of the body.

The whole drawing is built from big, closed-off spaces: the head, the body, the belly patch, each flipper and each foot are all separate regions with thick outlines and no clutter inside them. That makes it forgiving for a hand that has not learned to stay inside the lines yet. It also gives you an easy way to talk through the picture with your child before they start, this bit is the tummy, these are the flippers, count the toes on each foot, and to plan a simple two or three colour scheme, since the belly patch practically asks to be left white or pale against a darker body.

There is no background, ice, or snow to add extra work, which keeps this one of the quicker sheets to finish. It suits a first attempt at colouring or a toddler who tires of pages with lots of small details, and works just as well as a calm five minute activity for a slightly older preschooler who wants to move fast.
