About this worksheet

Big and small are among the first comparison words children learn, and this page makes the comparison as clean as possible: the same picture twice in a row, identical except for size. An elephant and a smaller elephant; a house and a smaller house.

Using identical pictures matters. Comparing a big mouse with a small elephant confuses the idea — the child has to ignore what things are and attend only to how big they are. Same-picture pairs isolate the size concept completely.

The big one and the small one swap sides from row to row, so pointing left every time will not work. Say the sentence together each row: "This elephant is big. This elephant is small."

How to use this sheet

Ask for full sentences — "this one is big" — rather than pointing alone. The vocabulary is the lesson; the circling is just the proof.
