What your child practices

  • Matches letters to sounds outside alphabetical order
  • Isolates the first sound of a spoken word
  • Applies phonics knowledge without sequence clues
  • Checks matches before committing to a line

About this worksheet

The same game as the K to O page, but with the training wheels off: five letters pulled from across the alphabet — B, F, S, T, Z — with nothing in sequence to lean on.

When letters run in alphabetical order, a clever child can match the last two by elimination and rhythm. A jumbled hand closes that shortcut; every letter has to be sounded and found on its own merits.

This is the page that shows whether letter-sound knowledge has generalized. If it goes smoothly, first-sound hearing is genuinely in place — a core piece of reading readiness.

How to use this sheet

If a match goes wrong, do not point at the right answer — ask for the picture's name again, slowly, and let the first sound do the correcting.
