About this worksheet

Six capital letters run down the left side of the page: H, E, M, K, A and N. On the right are six pictures in a different order: a key, a nose, a horse, an apple, an elephant and a mouse. Your child says each picture's name and draws a line from each letter to the picture that starts with its sound.

Around ages 4 and 5, many children start to hear the first sound in a spoken word and link it to a letter. This skill is an early step toward reading and spelling. The letters on this page are not in alphabetical order, and there are six to keep track of, so your child has to listen for each sound on its own instead of following a pattern.

Each picture has its name printed underneath in small capitals. Your child could match the letter shapes without listening at all, so have them say each word out loud and tell you the first sound before they draw a line.

How to use this sheet

A and E are the hardest here, because apple and elephant start with short vowel sounds, so say those two words slowly and stretch the first sound. Have your child start with a pencil so a wrong line can be erased.
