Things That Go Together

A key, a teapot, a baseball bat, an umbrella, a table and a toothbrush line up down the left side of the page. Down the right, in a mixed-up order, are the things that go with them: a padlock, a teacup, a baseball, a pair of rain boots, a chair and a tube of toothpaste. Your child draws a line to join each pair.

Spotting which things belong together asks a young child to think about how objects are used, not just what they look like. It builds everyday vocabulary and the kind of reasoning that sorting and grouping grow from.

Ask "What do we use this with?" for each picture before any lines go down. If your child is unsure, act it out: pretend to pour tea, or swing a bat and wait for the ball.
