What your child practices

  • Begins c on the right, a little below the middle line
  • Curves up and back to the left instead of forward
  • Stops before the curve closes, leaving the right side open
  • Fits c between the middle line and the baseline

About this worksheet

A single curve makes c, so the model shows one start dot and one arrow. Look for the dot on the right-hand side, about a quarter of the way down from the middle line, with its arrow heading up and over to the left. The curve touches the middle line, comes down the back, rounds the bottom on the baseline and carries on to the right, stopping a little way up. The right side stays open.

It looks like the easiest page in the set, and it may be the most useful. The same backward curve begins a, d, g, o and q, so time spent here is time saved on five other letters. Plenty of four-year-olds start c at the bottom and work up, which gives the same shape and the wrong habit. This style adds nothing to c, so it matches the plain print c you know.

If the curve keeps closing into an o, put a fingertip in the gap and ask your child to stop before reaching it. Pick a c word for each row as it fills up, such as cat, cup or cow.

How to use this sheet

Small c is half the height of the capital, so look for letters that stay under the middle line. On the last row, three or four careful letters are plenty.
