What your child practices

  • Starts lowercase e on the left, a little under halfway up
  • Draws the short rising line to the right before the curve
  • Loops back over the top and down through the start without lifting
  • Finishes e open on the right, a little above the baseline

About this worksheet

No other letter starts where e does, in the middle of its own space. The single start dot on the model is on the left, a little under halfway up, and its arrow points right. A short line goes across, rising slightly, then turns up and back to the left, brushing the middle line as it goes over the top. From there the curve runs down the back of the letter, passing through the starting point, dips to the baseline and stops a short way up on the right.

The turn where the short line meets the curve is the hard part. Some children draw a c first and put the line in last, and others loop so tightly that the top fills in. In a printed book e has a level bar and a sharp corner. Here the line slopes up and the turn is rounded, so the pencil can keep moving the whole way around.

Trace the short line on the big e twice with a finger before picking up the pencil. Egg, elephant and elbow begin with e, the letter English uses more than any other.

How to use this sheet

If the turn is hard, let your child stop at the end of the short line, breathe, and then go around. The pause disappears by itself with practice.
