What your child practices

  • Draws the tall line of k first, from the top line to the baseline
  • Goes back up the tall line before swinging out into the loop
  • Closes the loop of k by bringing it back to the tall line
  • Slants the leg down to the baseline and ends it with a small flick

About this worksheet

Capital K takes three strokes. Small k, in this style, takes one. On the model, the start dot sits on the top line and the arrow beneath it points down. The pencil drops to the baseline, climbs the same line again to a little over halfway to the middle line, then swings out to the right, up to the middle line, around and back in to the tall line. That closes a small loop. Without a lift, the leg slants down to the baseline and ends in a small flick.

You may be looking for the two straight arms of a plain print k. This k has a loop and a leg instead, so the whole letter is one movement and there is no hunting for the spot where two arms meet. The loop is what slips. Left open, it turns the letter into an h. Pushed up past the middle line, it starts to look like a capital R.

Say "down, up, loop, kick" so each part gets its own beat. That last word starts with k, as do kite, key and king.

How to use this sheet

Do the h page first if you have it. Both letters begin with a tall line and a climb part of the way back up it, so only the loop and the leg are new here.
