What your child practices

  • Starts lowercase f at the tip of the hook, on the right
  • Brings the long line of f down through the baseline to the bottom line
  • Curls the tail of f to the left, on the opposite side from the hook
  • Lifts the pencil and crosses f on the middle line, left to right

About this worksheet

Look for the two numbered dots on the big f. Dot 1 sits at the tip of the hook, on the right, about halfway between the middle line and the top line. The pencil goes up and back to the left, touches the top line, and comes straight down through the middle line and the baseline. On the bottom line it rounds to the left and climbs a little way back up. Dot 2 starts the bar, drawn left to right along the middle line, across the long line.

In plain print f stands on the baseline. In this style it has a tail, like g, and is the only small letter to touch both the top line and the bottom line. At four, a line that long tends to lean or stop early. The hook can also land on the wrong side, and starting at dot 1, on the right, settles that before the line begins.

Trace the model with a finger and say "over, down, down, curl" so the long line gets two beats. Leave the bar until that part is steady. Fish, frog and foot begin with f.

How to use this sheet

The bar belongs on the middle line, the same place t is crossed. If it drifts up into the hook, have your child touch the middle line with a finger before drawing it.
