What your child practices

  • Starts the line of lowercase i on the middle line
  • Ends the line of i on the baseline with a small flick
  • Adds the dot of i after the line, not before
  • Keeps the dot of i small and straight above the line

About this worksheet

Two marks, and the model numbers them. Dot 1 is on the middle line with an arrow pointing down. The line drops straight to the baseline and turns up to the right in a small flick, and then the pencil lifts. The 2 sits beside the dot of the i, which goes straight above the line, halfway between the middle line and the top line.

The short line is quickly learned. The dot is what wanders: it gets drawn before the line, or it swells to the size of a pea. Line first and dot last is the order worth settling now, since j is made the same way. If you are used to plain print, where the line of i stops bare on the baseline, you will notice the flick. The same flick ends l, n and u in this style, so this short line is a good place to learn it.

Ask for a dot no bigger than a poppy seed, made with one tap of the pencil. For words there are ink, insect and igloo, and the small words "in" and "it" that turn up on nearly every page of a book.

How to use this sheet

Because i is so quick, this is a good page for trying the empty row early. If the flick keeps growing, point to the model and show how soon it stops.
