What your child practices

  • Makes the ring of q first, starting just under the middle line
  • Closes the ring of q before the line comes down
  • Brings the line of q straight down to the bottom line
  • Tells q from g by the flick to the right

About this worksheet

One start dot marks the big q at the top. It sits on the right, just under the middle line, and a small arrow sends the pencil back to the left. This is g's ring over again: across the top, down the far side, under, and up to meet the dot. From there the line falls straight through the baseline to the bottom line, where it turns into a small flick to the right.

A child who has just learned g will try to finish q the same way. Both start with the very same ring, but the tail of g curls back to the left. Plain print often leaves q with a bare straight line, and here it ends in a flick. It does a useful job here: one letter turns left, the other right.

Tell your child the flick points to the end of the row, where the next letter would go. In words that letter is nearly always u, as in queen, quilt and quack. Write a u after one finished q and read "qu" together.

How to use this sheet

Keep the flick on q small: it turns right on the bottom line and stops almost at once. If a g turns up, ask which way its tail went and let your child check the model.
