What your child practices

  • Begins p on the middle line, the same place n begins
  • Takes the long line of p all the way to the bottom line
  • Comes back up the long line before turning out into the arch
  • Leaves p open, with the arch ending in a flick on the baseline

About this worksheet

Half of this letter hangs below the baseline. The model has one start dot, on the middle line, and its arrow sends the pencil straight down through the baseline to the bottom line. Back up the same line it comes, and some way short of the middle line it turns out to the right, goes over an arch that touches the middle line at the top, then drops to the baseline and finishes in a flick.

Plain print closes p into a round shape against the line. This one stays open, so do not wait for the arch to curl back in. Being open also makes p hard to mix up with q, which keeps its ring in this style. The slips to expect are with the long line. Stopped at the baseline it leaves an n. Set wholly above the baseline, the way capital P is, it turns into an h.

Before each row, ask your child to put a finger on the bottom line and show you where the pencil turns around. Pencil starts with p, which is handy, and so do pizza and puppy.

How to use this sheet

The climb back up the long line is the hard part, so let it wobble. What counts is that the arch sits between the middle line and the baseline and not down in the space below.
