What your child practices

  • Begins t below the top line, so it is shorter than l
  • Rounds the foot of t on the baseline and sweeps it to the right
  • Lifts the pencil between the foot and the bar
  • Draws the bar of t on the middle line, left to right

About this worksheet

Two strokes make this t, so the model carries numbered dots 1 and 2, each with an arrow. Dot 1 sits a little over halfway between the middle line and the top line. From it the pencil comes straight down, rounds on the baseline and sweeps out to the right and up in a curved foot. Then it lifts. Dot 2 is on the middle line, and the bar runs from it to the right, across the line just drawn.

Children who have met l, h and b tend to send t up to the top line too, and many plain print alphabets do the same. This one starts lower, which helps keep t and l apart. The foot is the other difference: a plain print t often just stops on the baseline. A bar set too high makes the letter look like a capital T.

Give the lift a beat of its own: "down and sweep, lift, across" is one way to say it. A child who rushes it drags the pencil up to the bar and leaves a stray line. Table, tiger, tent and toes give you a t word for each row.

How to use this sheet

Before the first row, point to dot 1 and to the space left above it, under the top line. Look for that same gap on the letters your child writes alone on the last two rows.
