About this worksheet
Small u is a cup with a line down its right side. Its start dot is on the middle line at the left, and the arrow under it points down. The pencil goes straight down, rounds the bottom on the baseline and climbs to the middle line on the right. It comes back down that same line and, on reaching the baseline, turns out to the right in a small flick.
The second trip down is what children leave off, and a u without it is only a cup. In plain print u sometimes stops there or adds only a straight line, while in this style u ends in a flick. That ending earns its place later, when v and w finish high on the middle line and u finishes low. Children also swap u with n, much the same shape turned over.
Ask for a short pause at the top on the right before the pencil comes back down. It keeps the last line on top of the one just drawn, where a rushed u leaves two lines side by side. Umbrella, up and under begin with u, and so does uncle.
How to use this sheet
A pointed bottom starts to look like v, so ask for a slow turn along the baseline. On the empty row, check that each u still comes back down its right side before the flick.
