What your child practices
- Draws w in one movement from the start dot at the far left
- Retraces the line between the two cups of w without lifting
- Rounds both cups of w on the baseline, about the same width
- Adds the tick to w after the second cup, level with the start dot
About this worksheet
One movement from start to finish. The model has a single start dot, at the far left on the middle line, and its arrow points down. The pencil drops to the baseline, rounds the bottom and climbs the far side to the middle line. It comes back down that side, rounds the bottom again and climbs once more. The tick comes last: a short dip and rise to the right, ending level with the start dot.
Retracing is where w comes apart: the pencil has to go back down the line it has just climbed. Children lift there and start the second cup apart from the first, or squeeze it as space runs out. In plain print w has pointed bottoms and no tick, so tell your child that here the bottoms are round. The retrace is worth the effort, since u, y and d need the same trip back down a line.
Trace the model with a finger first and count "cup one, cup two, tick" out loud. Web, wagon and window start with w, and water is one your child says every day.
How to use this sheet
Do the u page before this one if you have it. If the second cup keeps getting squeezed, ask for just four w's on the last row so each one has room.
