Counting Is Not the Same as Understanding Numbers

A child reciting to twenty has learned a rhyme. The understanding underneath arrives later, in five separate pieces — and knowing which is which saves a lot of worry.

A child who can recite "one two three four five six seven eight nine ten" has learned a rhyme. It is a useful rhyme and worth learning. It tells you almost nothing about whether they understand what four means.

This catches a lot of parents out, because the rhyme is the visible part and it arrives early. The understanding underneath it arrives later, in pieces, and each piece is worth knowing about — mostly so you stop worrying about the wrong things.

The five things underneath counting

1. The number word sequence. Reciting the words in order. Most children have this to ten somewhere between two and three, and it is pure memorization — the same skill as a nursery rhyme.

2. One-to-one correspondence. Touching exactly one object per number word. This is genuinely hard. A child who can recite to ten will often count six buttons as "one two three four five six seven eight" because the words and the pointing run at different speeds.

3. Cardinality. Understanding that the last word you said is the answer. Count five bricks with a three year old, then ask how many there are, and a great many will count again from the start. They have not yet grasped that counting produces a total.

4. Order irrelevance. Knowing you get the same answer counting left to right or right to left. Children often believe recounting a different way will give a different number.

5. Subitizing. Seeing a small quantity — two, three, sometimes four — without counting at all. This one arrives early, often before formal counting, and it is the foundation everything else rests on.

Most "he can count to twenty but doesn't know what three is" situations are a child with strong number-word sequence and no cardinality yet. That is a completely ordinary place to be at three.

Why numerals are a separate problem again

The written symbol 4 is a fourth thing, unconnected to any of the above. It is an arbitrary shape that stands for a quantity.

A child can:

  • recite to twenty
  • count four bricks correctly
  • know that means there are four
  • and still not recognize 4 on a page

Nothing has gone wrong. Writing the numeral is a fifth skill, and it is a fine-motor task before it is a mathematical one.

The sequence that works: quantity first, then the word, then the symbol. A sheet that shows a numeral beside a matching group of objects is doing this deliberately — the numeral is being attached to something the child can already see and count.

What to do about each piece

For the sequence: count everything, out loud, constantly. Stairs, buttons on a coat, spoons on the table. Repetition is the whole method.

For one-to-one correspondence: make the objects move. Counting is far easier when each item is physically shifted from one pile to another as it is counted, because the hand paces the voice. Counting a fixed row of dots on paper is much harder than counting five bricks into a box, and if a child struggles on paper, try bricks before concluding anything.

For cardinality: ask "how many?" straight after counting, every time, and if they recount, just answer it yourself — "yes, five, that's five bricks." The penny drops through repetition rather than explanation.

For order irrelevance: count the same set twice, deliberately differently, and be visibly pleased that it came out the same. "Four again! It's still four."

For subitizing: dice, dominoes, and fingers held up quickly. Ask how many without giving time to count. Small numbers only — two and three, then four.

Setting the table is better than any worksheet

One-to-one correspondence has an ideal real-world exercise and it is laying the table. Four people, four forks. The child has to hold the quantity in mind and match it to objects, and it is a real job rather than an exercise, which matters more at this age than it sounds.

Handing out snacks, putting one sock on each foot, giving every teddy one cup — same skill, all free.

What worksheets are good for here

Counting sheets do one thing well: they hold a quantity still. A group of six apples printed on a page does not move, wander off, or get eaten, so a child can count it, recount it, and check. That stability is genuinely useful for cardinality.

They are also how numeral formation gets practiced, which is a hand skill needing repetition on a surface that does not care how many times you do it.

What they cannot do is teach the underlying quantity sense. That comes from moving objects around with an adult talking about it.

A sensible split at three and four: mostly bricks, buttons and stairs, with a counting sheet a couple of times a week to attach the written numeral to something the child already understands.

Signs a child is ready for numeral work

  • Counts a small group accurately, touching each item once
  • Answers "how many?" without recounting, at least sometimes
  • Recognizes two or three without counting
  • Can hold a pencil with some control for a few minutes

Absent the last one, do the counting and skip the writing. Numeral formation is a fine-motor problem, and pushing it before the hand is ready produces a child who is bad at 2s rather than a child who understands two. There is more on that timing in our guide to pencil grip by age.

Where to start on this site

The numbers and counting sheets work through one numeral at a time, each pairing the written symbol with a group of objects to count first, then dotted numerals to trace, then a blank row. That order is deliberate — quantity, then symbol, then formation.

If a child is not there yet, the matching and sorting sheets are the better starting point: sorting by size and continuing a pattern are earlier mathematical thinking than counting is, and both arrive well before a child counts reliably.

The short version

Reciting to twenty is a party trick and a good one. Understanding that five means five takes another year or two, arrives in pieces, and is built by moving objects around while somebody counts out loud with you. Worksheets help with the written numeral and with holding a quantity still. They do not build the understanding, and a child who has the rhyme without the understanding is exactly where they should be at three.
