  • Checks an answer before committing to it

About this worksheet

A counting check that needs no handwriting at all. Each row shows a group of shapes and three candidate numbers; your child counts the group and circles the number that matches.

Because the answer is a circle rather than a written numeral, the page works for children whose counting has raced ahead of their pencil control — which, at this age, is most of them. It also makes wrong answers cheap: a mis-count gets crossed out and re-circled without any erasing drama.

The distractor numbers sit close to the right answer on purpose. A child who guesses from the look of the group instead of counting will get caught out, which is exactly the nudge toward careful counting the page is for.

How to use this sheet

Encourage touching each shape while counting. If a row goes wrong, count it together once — then move on rather than drilling it.
