About this worksheet
This coyote sits up on its haunches with one front paw lifted in a wave, its head turned to look straight out at whoever is colouring it. Both ears stand tall and pointed, one turned to show the inner ear shape. Its chest carries a soft fluffy patch, and its tail curls around by its back leg, ending in a zigzag tip. Two small tufts of grass sprout at its feet, the only scenery on the page.
Most of the coyote is made up of big, forgiving shapes — the body, the raised paw, the two ears — so a child can colour steadily without worrying about staying inside tiny lines. The chest fur and the zigzag tail tip ask for a bit more care, which makes a good moment to slow down and talk about how a coyote's coat often changes colour from its back to its belly. The raised paw is worth pointing out too: is the coyote waving hello, or asking for a treat?
It sits in the middle of the difficulty range for animal sheets in this set — easier than anything with heavy background detail, but with enough small sections in the tail and chest to hold the interest of a four or five year old, while a younger child can happily stick to the big shapes and skip the fiddly bits.
How to use this sheet
Let your child start with the two ears and the body, since those are the biggest, easiest shapes. Save the zigzag tail tip and chest fur for last, and talk about why the coyote might be waving.
