What your child practices

  • Pulls the tall line of lowercase b straight down from the top line
  • Turns right at the baseline into a cup without lifting
  • Ends b with a small tick at the middle line
  • Tells b from d by its open top and where the pencil starts

About this worksheet

This b begins on the top line, where the model carries its one start dot and an arrow pointing down. The pencil comes straight down to the baseline, curves around the bottom to the right like a cup and climbs to the middle line. It ends with a tick, a small dip to the right and back up to the middle line. The top of the cup stays open.

If you learned plain print you will look for a closed round part, and this style leaves b open on purpose. That helps with the well-known mix-up with d. On these pages the two letters do not even share a shape: d starts just under the middle line with a closed ring, while b starts on the top line and never closes.

Call the bottom of b a cup, and point out that a cup is open at the top. Bus, bed and banana are b words to say between rows. If a d turns up, do not erase it. Ask where the pencil started and let your child find the dot on the model.

How to use this sheet

Reversing b and d is ordinary until six or seven, so there is no need to correct every one. Doing this page and the d page a few days apart gives each starting point time to settle.
