Butterfly Garden Colouring Page

This page has one large butterfly facing straight out, with a round, happy face, two dot eyes and two curled antennae topped with little balls. Its body is a striped oval running down the middle, and its four wings spread out wide, each one holding a single big circle in the centre. Underneath the butterfly sits one flower, a ring of rounded petals around a plain circle middle, with a pointed leaf poking out on either side at the base.

Nearly every shape here is large and closed off with a thick line, so a child can colour the wings, the flower petals and the leaves without much fear of skidding outside the edges. The four wing circles are the same size on the left and right, which gives a natural nudge to try matching colours, blue on both top wings, say, or the same yellow in both bottom circles, without it ever being a rule they have to follow. The striped body and the small antenna tips are about the only fiddly bits, good for a bit of extra concentration once the big spaces are done.

Because the shapes are so few and so open, this is one of the easier sheets in the garden set, well suited to a two or three year old holding a chunky crayon for the first time, and still satisfying for a four or five year old who wants to try the antennae and stripes with a finer pencil.
