Color the Pictures With X

A listening page for the letter X. Very few everyday words start with X, so this page does what alphabet charts do and shows words that have X in them. Capital and lowercase X sit large at the top, with nine pictures in a grid below: a fox, a fish, a gift box, a sun, a big number six, a key, an axe, a cat and a xylophone. Five have X in their names and four do not. The child colors the X pictures.

In most of these words the X sound comes at the end, where it makes a quick "ks" sound, as in fox, box, six and axe. Xylophone is the odd one out: its X is at the front and sounds like Z. Hearing a sound at the end of a word is harder than hearing the first sound, so this page asks a bit more of a child's listening than a usual letter page.

Say each name slowly and stretch the ending, "fo-ks," then ask whether it has the X sound. Call the wrapped present a box so the word matches the sound.
