What your child practices

  • Recognize the capital letter Z
  • Tell Z apart from look-alike letters such as N, S and X
  • Scan a grid row by row from left to right
  • Count the letters found and write the number

About this worksheet

A big capital Z sits in a box at the top of the page. Below it is a grid of thirty-six capital letters, and nine of them are Z. Your child hunts through the grid, draws a circle around each Z, then counts them and writes the number in the box at the bottom.

The other letters were chosen because they share parts of Z: N has the same slanted line, S has a similar zigzag shape, and X, K, M, W and V are all built from diagonals. To find the real Z, children have to check for a flat line on top, one slanted line, and a flat line on the bottom. Noticing small differences like these is the kind of careful looking that later helps a child tell letters apart in print.

Draw a Z in the air together before starting and say its three parts out loud: across, slide down, across. If an N gets circled, turn the page sideways and compare the two letters.

How to use this sheet

Let your child search at their own pace and resist pointing, since the looking is the skill. There are nine Z's if you want to count them together at the end.
