About this worksheet

Capital letters F, G, H, I and J run down the left side, and five labeled pictures run down the right in a mixed-up order: jellyfish, horse, fish, grapes and ice cream. The child says each picture's name and draws a line from the letter to the picture that starts with it.

Hearing the first sound of a spoken word is one of the earliest phonics skills, and it usually comes before a child can blend or read words. Matching that sound to a letter they can see links what they hear with what's printed. That link is what reading is built on later.

Before your child picks up a pencil, point to each picture and stretch its first sound together, like h-h-horse. Once the sound is clear, finding the letter is much easier.

How to use this sheet

The pictures don't line up with their letters, so let your child trace the path with a finger before drawing the line. Ice cream is the tricky one, because the I says its own name here, so say "i-i-ice" slowly.
