Find and Circle the Letter E

A big capital E sits in a box at the top of the page. Below it is a grid of thirty-six capital letters, and nine of them are E. Your child looks through the grid, draws a circle around each E, then counts them and writes the number in the box at the bottom.

Most of the other letters look a lot like E. F, L, H and B are all built from the same straight lines, so a quick look is not enough and your child has to check for the top, middle and bottom arms. Telling apart letters that differ by one small line is a real step toward reading, where a single stroke can turn one letter into another.

Before starting, say the letter's name together and trace the big E with a finger: one line down, then three lines across. If an F gets circled, put a finger on the spot where its bottom line should be.
