About this worksheet

Letter recognition and letter writing are different skills, and recognition comes first. This sheet asks for no writing at all: your child simply scans a grid of thirty circles and colours in the ones holding a capital A.

Visual discrimination like this is what lets a child eventually pick a known letter out of a page of text. The distractor letters have been chosen to include some that share features with A β€” such as R, N and M with their diagonal strokes β€” so the task is genuinely a discrimination exercise rather than a colouring page with letters printed on it.

At the bottom of the page there is a small extension task: count the A's found and draw that many stars. This links letter recognition to early counting without needing a second worksheet.

How to use this sheet

There are ten capital A's on the page. Let your child find them at their own pace, and resist pointing β€” the scanning is the skill being practised.
