What your child practices
- Draws the tall line of B before either bump
- Starts the first bump at the top and the second at the middle
- Closes each bump back onto the line
- Keeps both bumps on the right-hand side
About this worksheet
Capital B is a tall line with two bumps stacked on its right side, and the model at the top numbers all three strokes. The line comes first, top to bottom. Then the pencil hops back to the top for the upper bump, and starts again from the middle for the lower one.
Two things go wrong with B. The bumps drift away from the line, leaving gaps, or they land on the left and the letter comes out backwards. Both are normal at four, and both fade with practice that starts from the line every time.
Say "down, bump, bump" together while tracing. If the letter keeps flipping, put a small dot to the right of the line to show which side the bumps live on.
How to use this sheet
A backwards B is common and not a worry. Point to the model and let your child compare the two rather than correcting mid-stroke.
