What your child practices

  • Hooks the top of z over to the right from a start on the left
  • Brings the top curve of z back in to a point on the baseline
  • Makes the lower curve of z bigger, down to the bottom line
  • Tells z from the number 3 by where it sits on the lines

About this worksheet

Here z looks like the number 3. The model's one start dot is on the left, a little below the middle line, with an arrow that heads up, then over to the right. The pencil touches the middle line, rounds the right side and comes back in to a point on the baseline. Without lifting, it swings out again in a bigger curve under the baseline, turns on the bottom line and stops a little way up on the left.

A child who can write a 3 has this movement already. It goes wrong when the whole letter sits above the baseline, where it really is a 3, or when the point in the middle is rushed and the curves melt into one bend. A plain print z is three straight lines, none of them under the baseline, so expect to explain that this curly letter is the same one.

Tap the baseline where the two curves meet and say "small curve, big curve" together. Zebra, zipper and zoo begin with z. Put this page next to the one for a to see how far the writing has come.

How to use this sheet

Write a big z in the air with the whole arm first, setting off up and over to the right. A z that faces the wrong way is ordinary at this age, so go back to the model and leave the eraser alone.
