What your child practices

  • Starts x at dot 1 on the left and curves over to the right
  • Lifts the pencil, then makes the second curve of x like a c
  • Touches the two curves of x halfway down without crossing them
  • Hears x at the end of words such as box and six

About this worksheet

This x takes two strokes, and the model marks them with numbered dots 1 and 2. Dot 1 is on the left, about a quarter of the way down from the middle line. Its arrow sends the pencil up and over to the right, down the right side, around the bottom on the baseline and back to the left: a backward c. The pencil lifts, and from dot 2 on the right it makes an ordinary c whose back touches the first curve halfway down.

You may be expecting two straight lines that cross, and here there are two curves that only touch. The first curve is the hard one: nearly every round letter travels back to the left and this one goes the other way, so many children write two c's facing the same way. The second is a c your child already knows, which leaves only half a letter to learn.

Hold two cupped hands back to back to show the shape before the pencil comes out. Few words start with x, so listen for it at the end of box, fox and six, or inside taxi.

How to use this sheet

If the curves drift apart or overlap, mark a small dot halfway between the middle line and the baseline and ask your child to make each curve just touch it.
