About this worksheet

A listening page for the letter L. Capital and lowercase L sit large at the top, and ten pictures fill the grid below. Six of them start with the L sound heard in lion; four do not. The child says each name and colors only the L pictures.

The pictures have no words under them, so the child has to listen to the first sound of each spoken name rather than match letter shapes. Noticing the first sound in a word is an early phonological awareness skill, and it is one of the steps that later helps children connect letters to the sounds they read.

Say each name slowly and hold the first sound β€” "lll-ion" β€” then ask whether it starts like L. The pictures show a lion, a cat, a sun, a ladybug, a lemon, a lollipop, a key, a leaf, a llama and a fish.

How to use this sheet

Name every picture together before any coloring starts, so the page tests sounds rather than vocabulary. Show how the tongue touches the top of the mouth for L in "lemon", then say "sun" and notice that it does not.
