What your child practices

  • Hear the first sound of a spoken word
  • Link the T sound to the letters T and t
  • Sort pictures by beginning sound
  • Color only the pictures that fit the rule

About this worksheet

A listening page for the letter T. Capital and lowercase T sit large at the top, and ten pictures fill the grid below. Six of them start with the crisp T sound heard in tiger; four do not. The child colors only the T pictures.

The pictures have no words under them, so the child has to listen to the first sound of each spoken name rather than match letter shapes. Hearing that first sound is an early step toward linking letters to reading.

Say each name slowly and tap out the first sound β€” "t-t-tiger" β€” then ask whether it starts like T. The pictures show a tiger, a cat, a tomato, a tree, a sun, a turtle, a fish, a train, a key and a tractor.

How to use this sheet

Name every picture together before any coloring starts. Put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth and tap out "t" for tomato, then try "sun" and hear how the sound slides instead of tapping.
