Count and Write: Numbers 11 to 20

Each of the five rows holds between eleven and twenty pictures: apples, fish, butterflies, beach balls and suns. Your child counts every picture in the row, then writes the total as a two-digit number in the orange square on the right.

The top line of every row is always exactly ten pictures, in two groups of five, and the extra pictures sit on the line below. At four and five, many children can recite the teen numbers but still lose their place when counting a large group. Seeing a full line of ten each time helps them start to understand that 13 means ten and three more, which is an early step toward place value.

Before your child writes, ask them to say the number out loud. Teen numbers like 12 and 21 are easy to write backwards at this age, so saying "one-three" as they write 13 can help them get the digits in the right order.
