What your child practises

  • Draws smooth curved strokes without stopping
  • Changes direction fluidly mid-line
  • Prepares the movements behind curved letters
  • Sustains control across a full page width

About this worksheet

Curves are the second pre-writing stroke, and they are noticeably harder than straight lines because the hand has to change direction smoothly rather than stopping and restarting.

The waves on this page get slightly deeper as you move down, so the sheet gets gradually more demanding without ever feeling like a different exercise. These are the same movements that later become the round parts of C, S, U and the hook on J.

Children often tackle a curve by drawing a series of short straight segments. That is a normal stage — the smoothness comes with practice, not with correction.

How to use this sheet

Try tracing the first row with a finger before using a pencil. The movement is easier to feel than to see.
