What your child practises

  • Maintains continuous movement without lifting the pencil
  • Coordinates the whole arm rather than only the fingers
  • Builds writing stamina across a full page
  • Prepares the fluency behind joined handwriting

About this worksheet

The hardest of the four pre-writing sheets. These rolling loops ask for continuous movement across the full width of the page without lifting the pencil — the foundation of fluent, eventually joined-up handwriting.

Loops recruit the whole arm rather than just the fingers, which is why they are so effective at building writing stamina. A child who can complete all six rows comfortably has the motor control for most lowercase letter formation.

If your child is still working on straight lines and curves, come back to this one later. It is genuinely a step up rather than more of the same.

How to use this sheet

Standing at a table, or working on a vertical surface like a fridge door, makes loops easier by engaging the shoulder.
