About this worksheet

Six pictures run down the page: a duck, a smiling sun, a rainbow, a zebra, an owl, and a pencil. Beside each picture are three capital letters, and your child says the picture's name and circles the letter it starts with.

Picking out the first sound of a spoken word is one of the earliest steps toward reading and spelling. This set uses different pictures and letters from the first set, so your child has to listen to each word rather than remember earlier answers.

Say each word slowly and stretch its first sound, like "sssun" or "rrrainbow." Owl is the tricky one, since its O does not make the sound in "octopus," so you may want to tell your child that it starts with O.

How to use this sheet

Name all six pictures together before your child picks up a pencil. After they finish, ask them to say the sound of each circled letter.
