About this worksheet

A listening page for the letter A. A capital A and a lowercase a sit side by side in a large box at the top, and six pictures fill the grid below. Three of them start with the short A sound heard in apple, and three do not. The child colors only the A pictures.

There are no words under the pictures on purpose. The job is to hear the first sound of a spoken word. That skill later helps a child connect letters to reading. A printed label would let them match letter shapes instead of listening.

Say each name slowly and stretch the first sound, "aaa-pple", then ask whether it starts like A. The pictures are an apple, a ball, a fish, an ant, an alligator and a sun.

How to use this sheet

Name every picture together before any coloring starts, so the page tests sounds rather than vocabulary. If a guess is wrong, say both words side by side, "apple, fish", and let them hear the difference.
