About this worksheet

A listening page for the letter H. A capital H and a lowercase h sit large at the top, and eight pictures fill the grid below. Four start with the breathy H sound heard in horse: a horse, a house, a hippo and a helicopter. The other four, a cat, a key, a duck and a cupcake, do not. The child colors only the H pictures.

There are no words under the pictures on purpose. The child has to listen for the first sound of each spoken name instead of matching letter shapes. Picking out the first sound of a word is an early phonological awareness skill, and it helps later when children start linking letters to the sounds they stand for.

Say each name slowly and stretch the first sound, as in "hhh-orse," then ask whether it starts like H. If the child isn't sure, say an H word and a non-H word one after the other, like "house, key," so they can hear the difference.

How to use this sheet

Name all eight pictures together before coloring starts, so the page checks sounds rather than vocabulary. Hold a hand in front of your mouths while saying "hippo" to feel the puff of air H makes, then try "cat" and notice the difference.
