About this worksheet

The gentlest sheet at level 2, and the one to start with. Nine dead ends is fewer than any other page on this grid, so a child stepping up from an 8 by 8 maze meets the longer route without also meeting more false turnings than before. Only one thing gets harder at a time.

Chicks start calling to their mother while still inside the egg, and the hen answers with clucks that they learn to recognize. After hatching they stay close to her and shelter under her wings for warmth. That makes this a cozy picture for a child moving up from an 8 by 8 maze: a longer route, but hardly any traps.

There is exactly one way through: no loops, and no square cut off from the rest.

How to use this sheet

Use this as the first level 2 sheet. Remind your child that the corridors are narrower than before, so slow pencil work matters more. Cluck like the hen when they reach her, and cheep like the chick at the start.
